01The story

The Journey

This is not a roadside photo stop; it is a morning with a saffron-growing family of Pampore. For a few weeks each autumn, the karewa plateaus of this town, long known as the saffron capital of Kashmir, turn purple with the saffron crocus. In the early morning, before the sun grows strong, families walk into the fields and pick each flower by hand. Join them to pluck the golden threads of saffron.

Back in the family home, the flowers are opened one by one. Each gives only three red stigmas — the threads that become Kashmiri saffron, a GI-tagged product of this valley. You help separate them, learn how they are dried, and how to tell true Kashmiri saffron from the rest. Then a cup of saffron kahwa, made with threads you watched being gathered.

04The community

Community & Responsibility

Every flower on this morning is someone’s harvest. The farming family is paid in full for their time and hospitality, and any saffron you buy, you buy directly from them, at their price. We keep groups small during the harvest so we never get in the way of the work. When you visit with us, your curiosity quietly becomes their livelihood.
